Hengeler Mueller secures permit for Deutsche ReGas to permanently operate ‘Deutsche Ostsee’ energy terminal

On 20 March 2026, Deutsche ReGas obtained the permit from the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment of Vorpommern (StALU) for the long-term operation of the ‘Deutsche Ostsee’ energy terminal on Rügen. Based on this amendment permit, the ‘Deutsche Ostsee’ energy terminal can now, using onboard generators, be operated permanently, thereby contributing to security of supply in Germany and Europe. The energie terminal in Mukran, along with the previously completed LNG terminal in Lubmin, are the first and only privately financed floating liquefied natural gas terminals in Germany.

During the current heating period, since October 2025, around 21 TWh have been fed into the German long-distance gas network via the ‘Deutsche Ostsee’ energie terminal. This makes the energie terminal, as the only site in eastern Germany, by far the largest entry point for liquefied natural gas in the country.

Hengeler Mueller advised and represented Deutsche ReGas comprehensively in the amendment permit process.
